For many years physicians have safely prescribed the hormone HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) to assist overweight patients in reducing their weight and decreasing their size. The hormone HCG, produced by the female placenta only during pregnancy, is primarily responsible for maintaining a viable fetus particularly during the first trimester. Additionally, it is thought that HCG causes a physiologic occurrence making stored fat available as a nutrient source for the growing fetus.
It is important to point out that our bodies contain several types of fat as described below.
The first is normal structural fat which fills the gaps between various organs, a sort of packing material. This structural fat performs important functions such as protecting coronary arteries, keeping the skin smooth and taut and providing cushion for the soles of our feet. Reserved fat, the second type, is a normal reserve of fuel upon which the body can freely draw when calories are needed to provide energy for muscular activity and maintaining body temperature. The third type is referred to as accumulated fat, and is entirely abnormal . It is the accumulation of such fat from which the overweight patient suffers. This abnormal fat is also a potential reserve of fuel, but, unlike the normal reserves, it is not readily available to the body as a primary energy source.
When an obese patient tries to reduce weight with a strict diet, they will initially lose the normal fat reserve. When these fats are exhausted, the body draws upon the normal structural fat. Only as a last resort will the body yield its abnormal (accumulated) reserves. By that time the patient usually feels irritable, weak and hungry. They feel famished and tired and their faces become drawn, but their abdomen, hips, thighs and arms show little improvement. The unwanted (accumulated) fat stays while the essential, necessary fat has diminished. Most people will complain that when they diet they “lose the wrong fat”, a true statement.
In a non-pregnant person, female or male, injecting HCG brings about a continual release of the abnormal, accumulated fat into the bloodstream, sparing the necessary structural fat and reserve fat, and the body uses it as an energy source. For this reason, patients undergoing HCG therapy will never feel hungry despite being on a drastically reduced caloric diet.
The use of HCG, while not approved by the FDA for weight loss, has been used safely and successfully for this purpose and has been associated with virtually no adverse side effects or health risks. Furthermore, many patients experience increased energy, without the feelings of nervousness, more clear thinking, less irritability and improved sleep. Since the weight lost during HCG therapy is typically from subcutaneous fat patients will notice improvement in body contour without the loss of lean mass.
The importance of weight loss cannot be overlooked as it is the most crucial element in modifying one’s lifestyle that leads to improved blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure thereby reducing one’s risk for heart disease, America’s number one cause of death.
